International competition to transform Tabakfabrik Linz’s inner courtyard into a green hotspot
24. October 2025
Immobilien Linz GmbH & Co KG and Tabakfabrik Linz are holding an international landscape architecture competition. An innovative, three-stage process is looking for visionary ideas to make the inner courtyard, Peter-Behrens-Platz (PBPneu), greener and more inviting and thus significantly increase the quality of stay for Linzers, visitors and the Tabakfabrik community.
The planned completion of QUADRILL in spring 2026 heralds the next phase in the transformation of Tabakfabrik Linz as a creative and innovation hub: The development into a fully-fledged district for working, living and enjoying. Submission of the first stage runs until January 7, 2026 at 10:00 am. The winners will be chosen in spring 2026.
A green, lively meeting place in the middle of Linz
The inner courtyard of the approximately 38,000 m² area is to become a place for encounters, creative exchange and recreation – a place that meets the needs of around 250 resident organizations and their employees and is open to visitors to the restaurants and stores as well as all Linz residents. The concept should take into account the challenges of climate change with periods of heat and heavy rainfall. Particular attention is paid to the respectful treatment of the architectural heritage of the industrial monument and the connection to the open spaces of the newly built QUADRILL ensemble.
City Councillor for Economics and Innovation Thomas Gegenhuber emphasizes the importance of the project: “The Tabakfabrik is developing into a new district in the middle of Linz, as a hub between the city centre and the port. Peter-Behrens-Platz is to become an attractive, green open space that promotes innovation, creativity and community life.”
Concepts are developed further in dialog
The competition process itself reflects Tabakfabrik’s collaborative spirit, as its Managing Director Denise Halak explains: “We believe in the power of finding ideas together. Our community workshop in June already served as a source of inspiration, the results of which were incorporated into the tender, such as the clear desire for more greenery. We are looking for a strong concept, a supporting idea that can challenge the existing uses. We are therefore inviting landscape architects to submit their outstanding design concept for a forward-looking development of Peter-Behrens-Platz.” Submissions must be made via the ANKÖ tender platform by 07.01.2025, 10:00 a.m.(extended – originally 15.12.2025).
A high-caliber jury, supported by tenant representatives, will select the three best designs, which will then be further developed in a second dialogical competition phase. The selected landscape architects will discuss and refine their concepts with the community in two workshops before the jury selects the winning design in spring 2026. Markus Eidenberger, Managing Director of Tabakfabrik and Immobilien Linz, summarizes the commission: “The winning architects will accompany the project from the design concept to the draft, submission and implementation planning through to construction. Construction work is still scheduled to start in 2026. Our aim is to transform the inner courtyard into a place to meet and linger – a place that invites people to live.”
